COMMON CONCERNS

Heel pain (Plantar fasciitis)

Plantar fasciitis is a common condition affecting people of all age groups and activity levels. It is characterised by pain commonly starting around the centre of the heel and particularly painful and stiff first thing in the morning or after a period of rest/inactivity.

Ingrown toenails

These can be very painful and will often become swollen, red and hypergranulated (form “proud flesh”). Ingrown toenails occur when the nail irritates the soft tissue (skin) enough to cause inflammation which can later become infected and require antibiotics. If caught early enough, ingrown toenails can usually be treated conservatively without the need for surgery and antibiotics.

Achilles tendinopathy

Pain at the back of the heel or slightly higher up into the Achilles tendon can be a sign of Achilles tendinopathy. The tendon may also become thickened and stiff. Pain usually starts at the beginning of an activity and may ease as the activity continues, however, if it becomes, chronic pain can be present all the time.

Thickened toenails

Thick toenails can occur with aging or can be a sign of a fungal nail infection. They can be extremely difficult to cut and maintain yourself.

Diabetes

Diabetes can affect your feet in terms of circulation and sensation. Seeing a Podiatrist regularly can ensure minor problems are picked up and dealt with before they become serious issues. Your Podiatrist can also do an assessment (usually annually) to monitor the status of your circulation and sensation.

Corns and calluses

These are areas of hardened skin which occur where there is excessive pressure and can become quite painful. Calluses are more widespread, whereas corns form in areas where the pressure is quite concentrated and will usually have a nucleus (like a central “pip”).
